The Lipstick-Face Demon (also known as The Man with the Fire in His Face or Red Face Demon[שֵׂטָן פָּנִים אֲדֹמוֹת,] ) is the main antagonist of the Insidious film series. It/He served as the main antagonist of the first film and Insidious: The Red Door, and the overarching antagonist of Insidious: Chapter 2, Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key.

In the first film, he was the entity in the Further, which he ruled with an iron fist. Of all the entities in the first film, he came the closest to capturing Dalton's physical body. The demon lives in a large, red-lit, demonically-decorated lair behind a blood-red door in the Further's version of the Lamberts attic.

Biography[]

Nothing is currently known about the demon's origins prior to the events of the first film.

Personality[]

Little is known about him except that he's a malevolent and violent entity. He seems to be quite territorial, as only his victims and subordinates are ever seen in his lair. According to Elise, demons such as him would only want to possess a body in order to cause pain to others.

Appearance[]

The Red Face Demon is a monstrous and sinister creature; tall and gaunt with a dark humanoid figure. His skin is leathery and black as coal. He has long spider-like fingernails, hooves, and a long forked tail - similar to depictions of the Christian devil in Medieval art. His head is mostly bald except for long tufts of hair around his ears. Although he doesn't clothing, he often wears silvery metallic claws over his own fingers

His most characteristic trait is his blood-red face, which greatly stands out from the rest of his body. His visage has exaggerated features with a prominent aquiline nose, shinning yellow eyes, crooked teeth, and a long forked tongue. It's unknown whether the red markings on his face are the pattern of his skin or or a kind of paint he applies.

Powers and Abilities[]

As a demon, the Red Face Demon seems to be much more powerful than other human souls trapped in the Further. The fact that he came closer than other Further entities to possessing Dalton's body is a testament to his superior power. He has also displayed several powerful supernatural abilities, such as:

  • Lordship over the Further: The Red Face Demon commands his own portion of the “Further”, enabling him to shape it as he wishes. Which denotes greater might than other weaker entities within the further.
  • Telekinesis: The Red Face Demon has displayed remarkable telekinetic powers, including knocking people off their feet with a roar or tripping people from a distance with a wave of his hand. When possessing physical bodies, even if only partially, he can channel a greater degree of power than other regular souls in the physical world, blasting people sitting around a table by just slamming his conduit's hand on it or by thrashing adult men with no apparent effort.
  • Aerokinesis: While The Red Face Demon was possessing Dalton, high winds begun to blow in Dalton’s room.
  • Astral Trapping: The Red Face Demon is able to trap astral forms in his domain once he gets his hands on them, as he did with Dalton on two separate occasions.
  • Teleportation: The Red Face Demon is able to travel from the Further to the world of the living and back.
  • Super Strength: Despite his slender figure, he's capable of sending grown adults flying with a brutal backhand hit. He’s also been seen punching directly through the red door when he was extremely angered at Josh for holding it shut.
  • Possession: The Red Face Demon was shown to have possessed Dalton with comparative ease.
  • Shadow Mimicry: Elise saw the Red Face Demon either hiding or blending into the shadows in Dalton’s room when he was in his coma.
  • Wall Clinging: The Red Face Demon clung to the wall above Dalton when he was in his coma. He also chased after Josh and Dalton on all fours on the ceiling and walls inside the further.

History[]

Insidious[]

The first manifestation of the Red Face Demon occurs when Renai hears it talk through the baby monitor. She hears something saying, ". . . I want it now!" loudly into the monitor. It's assumed this is actually the demon and it's implied that he wants Dalton's body. Dalton's spirit is captured by the Demon in his sleep the next night. The demon was able to do this because, as Elise later explains, "Dalton thinks his astral projections are dreams and it is this lack of fear that led him to travel a bit too far . . ." (in the world of the Further). It's assumed that Dalton somehow entered the area in the Further where the demon was able to take control of him.

The demon later appears behind Josh and roars menacingly, frightening his mother, Lorraine. It disappears into Dalton's room and ransacks it completely.

Josh volunteers to enter the Further to rescue his son, Dalton, who's found chained to the floor in the demon's lair. As the demon sharpens his claws while listening to Tiny Tim's "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" from a bronze phonograph, Josh frees Dalton. The demon senses Josh's presence and gives chase to the two; however, Josh succeeds and returns Dalton to his body in the material world. The demon, having lost his connection to Dalton is unable to reappear.

Insidious Chapter 2 []

At the very end of Insidious Chapter 2, Elise hears a sound coming from behind Allison in the shadows that can be implied to have been the Red-Faced Demon as it made a creaking noise, hinting that he somehow escaped the Further again.

Insidious Chapter 3[]

Lipstick-Face demon

The Red-Faced Demon appears at the very end of Insidious: Chapter 3 when Elise comes home. She finds Jack's sweater missing from its hanger and instead folded on her bed. She smiles, but her dog begins barking at a face that appears through an open door. As she stares at the face, the demon appears behind her. This occurs before the first Insidious as it is a prequel.

Insidious: The Last Key[]

Red Face Demon (2018)

Arriving back home after her investigation in Five Keys, New Mexico, Elise dreams of the Lambert family residence and their son whom she had earlier accidentally encountered while traversing the Further. By Dalton's bed, the Red-Faced Demon appears looking in through the window. Directly after this, Elise wakes up and is called by Lorraine, subsequently beginning Elise's investigation at the Lambert residence. \

Insidious: The Red Door[]

In Insidious: The Red Door, the Lipstick Face Demon haunts Dalton Lambert once again after ten years. He is first seen when Dalton is painting the red door at his art school, only for Lipstick Face Demon's hand to briefly grab Dalton's hand for a moment and causing a big gash wound in Dalton's hand. Eventually, Lipstick Face Demon succeeds in possessing Dalton, and intends on going on a rampage, however, Josh and Dalton draw back the Demon into the Further. Slamming the door to the Demon's lair shut, Josh tries to keep the door closed, while Dalton returns to the real world to paint his painting of the door black, causing the door in the Further to turn black as well, sealing the door and trapping Lipstick Face Demon for good.

Trivia[]

  • The demon bears a strong resemblance to the Sith apprentice Darth Maul from the science-fiction series "Star Wars." This is most likely due to the similar angular red and black markings on their faces, as well as their sinister personalities.
  • The demon makes a crackling sound whenever it is going to be seen, making his appearance very obvious. This explains why many fans suspect that it was the demon behind Allison at the end of Insidious: Chapter 2.
  • In the demon's spare time he enjoys his favorite hobbies: puppeteering and sharpening his claws.
  • The demon made an appearance in Insidious: Chapter 3. His presence made a dog bark at the shadows as he showed his face behind Elise, symbolizing that he was soon going to begin haunting the Lambert family.
  • The demon is seemingly the strongest entity/antagonist to have ever appeared in the series because he is a demon, not a spirit, which cuts off any bond he has with the physical plane and makes him indestructible.
  • The demon plays the song "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" in his lair, which is the same song that the spirit of The Dancing Boy played in front of Renai. This implies that the demon sent him to haunt Renai, which could mean that the demon has control over other inhabitants of the Further. Alternatively, it could suggest that the Dancing Boy is a prior victim of the Demon
  • The demon could be the Insidious franchise's version of Satan, as he shares many similarities with Satan in appearance, personality, and abilities. Like Satan, he has power over the dark realm of the afterlife and its inhabitants in the Insidious universe.
  • The Demon seems to know Parker Crane, as he forms an alliance with Parker and the long-haired fiend.
  • The Demon might know about the Man that Can't Breathe, as he appears at the ending of Chapter 3.
  • The Demon's appearance might be the most iconic image in the entire Insidious franchise.
  • If the Demon is in command of all entities in the Further, he may be the main antagonist of the entire series, sending his lackeys to the living world.
  • Joseph Bishara, the composer of the Insidious series' musical score, portrayed The Demon in all of his appearances.
